Heritage Tavern

Quick Bite: Overall ok, but taste-wise not as good as our first time. The service was great and they happily offered to store our stroller. Eh. It will be a while before we return.

Service:

Average/great, nothing out of the ordinary. They easily accommodated our family and adjusted with the stroller and car seat taking up space. We made reservations for this dinner which I would recommend. Additionally parking is pretty easy! Since the restaurant is quite close to the Madison Children’s Museum, you have the choice of two parking structures.

Ambiance:

When entering the restaurant it’s a darker space, reminiscent of an old classy country club bar, with beautiful  dark wood complimenting the bright black and white tiled floor.

Large Groups:

Maybe. I wouldn’t do more than 6 guests as it might get a little cramped.

Taste:

Seared Scallop and Confit Sunchoke-brown butter bacon vinaigrette, ham-pickled fiddleheads, overwintered spinach, apple

This was the favorite of the night, because we were scraping the plate to get the last bites of delicious broth.

Crispy Pork Belly and Tuna-Heritage pork belly, sashimi tuna, pickled mango, macadamia nut miso, pineapple mango compote

This was a very interesting dish. The flavors separately were delicious, but as a composite seemed mismatched.

Mushroom Crusted Striploin and Braised Short Rib -foraged mushroom, demi-pickled cipollini, beet glazed radish, spinach, pomme puree, au poivre

Unsure, we can’t remember.

Pork Grits with Collards (On special)

This was quite disappointing. The pork was dry, I wish there were more grits, the collards added a nice flavor. Ade ended up eating the majority of this for me!

Carmel Profiterole-salted caramel, toasted pecans, Wisconsin maple ice cream

These felt like fancy cream puffs that ended up not traveling very well, so find your dessert stomach and finish them at the restaurant.

Chocolate Cake

Unsure, we can’t remember.

Duck Fat Peach Donuts

This was disappointing since it wasn’t very peachy at all! I expected to see and taste chunks of peach in the donut.

Yeah, No

This a tricky one. The first time we visited the restaurant during Madison Winter Restaurant Week 2024, we fell in love with the restaurant after experiencing it ourselves, and hearing countless great reviews. Fast forward to the summer during Concerts on the Square, where the BBQ from their affiliated catering was extremely disappointing. Now we arrive at a slightly inconsistent experience in the Fall. Based on this visit, we would choose Heritage over restaurants we  REALLY dislike, but it may be a while before we return.
